Powell-Peralta x Andy Anderson;
Andy Anderson joined Powell Peralta after George Powell discovered him winning the amateur division of a World Championship Freestyle Skate Contest in Vancouver. Anderson officially turned professional for Powell Peralta in 2019, his first official Powell Peralta pro-video segments were released on December 25, 2020.
Known for his unique style with an extensive arsenal of technical tricks which blend old school freestyle skateboarding with modern techniques, Anderson is also recognised for his commitment to safety, in wearing a protective helmet while skateboarding, not common among professional street skaters.
Powell-Peralta artist Vernon Courtlandt Johnson (VCJ) was tasked with developing Andy Anderson’s Pro Skateboard Graphic. VCJ was inspired by Anderson’s “elegance and eloquence” on a skateboard. When Anderson was asked if he had any ideas for the pro-graphic, and what his “spirit animal was”, he responded, a “Blue Heron”.
In blending Powell Peralta's iconic artistic heritage and in tribute to Anderson's distinctive style and his "spirit animal", VCJ developed the “Heron Skull” graphic. Featuring a mystical "Skull" wearing a unique helmet with mystical “Blue Heron” motif details, and a "Heron Skull" to the helmet's centre front. A multi-layered visual that looks like a skull from one angle and a Heron's silhouette from another, with further graphics symbolising Anderson's adaptability and mastery of environments, and his considered choices in safety with the helmet, and his quest to de-stigmatise helmet use in skateboarding.
The "Heron Skull" graphic becoming Anderson's first Powell-Peralta pro graphic in 2019.
Andy Anderson’s Pro Signature Artwork
- 2019: Blue Heron, also known as Heron, Heron 1 and the Heron Skull. Featuring an ancient and mystical blue heron wearing a helmet, iconic to Anderson. Includes hidden wetland scenery and symbolic details of adaptability to environments.
- 2022: Heron Egg, also known as Heron 2. A continuation of the Heron graphic theme. Depicts a baby heron hatching out of an egg shell. The background features tiny "Herand" symbols - ampersands shaped like herons.
- 2024: Theory Map. Graphic art of a technical nature, featuring an abstract map tracking the physics, flick directions, and catch zones of complicated skateboard flip tricks. It mirrors the scientific way Andy deconstructs flat-ground skateboarding.
- 2025: Hydrant Dragon. Featuring "George", the original Powell-Peralta banner dragon holding a "Vajra", a sacred ritual object of Hinduism and Buddhism, symbolising indestructible properties, irresistible force, strength, stability, balance and the union of wisdom and method. The graphic embodies Anderson's holistic approach to skateboarding, and bridges his unique versatile skating style with Powell's historic roots. The graphic further pays tribute to 1990s street skating, and the balancing physics of the "Natas (Kaupas) Spin" trick.
