The Rodney Mullen "Chess" skateboard graphic was originally released by Powell Peralta in 1988. Designed by long time Powell Peralta artist Vernon Courtland Johnson (VCJ), the graphic is a tribute to Mullen's analytical, technical and calculated approach to skateboarding, equivalent to that of a chess grandmaster. 
Mullen systematically invented dozens of modern flat-ground and flip tricks (like the kick-flip and the impossible), by visualising his movement and board position mathematically. The chessboard concept was designed by VCJ to symbolize Rodney Mullen's strategic brilliance as the king of freestyle skateboarding.
